Healthy Smiles
Healthy Smiles for Wood County offers a preventative oral health program at participating schools in Wood County. The program has a primary focus on prevention of tooth decay in
eligible children through outreach, education, fluoride varnish placement, and sealant placement. These services are provided at no cost.
A licensed dental provider brings their portable dental equipment to participating schools and will screen participating children for dental needs and sealants or fluoride varnish are
placed on appropriate teeth. Toothbrushes and toothpaste are provided along with oral health education. For children found to have unmet dental needs, the Healthy Smiles for Wood County
program works with families and other school personnel (as appropriate) to find children a place where their dental needs can be met.
Healthy Smiles program offers dental services at no charge:
- A dental screening for visible cavities or other oral health related conditions
- Dental sealants if needed
- Fluoride Varnish
- Toothbrush and toothpaste and oral health education
- A letter will be sent home after the visit with services provided and additional care needed
Dental sealants are a thin plastic coating painted on the chewing surface of back teeth; sealants protect the deep grooves from developing cavities.
Fluoride varnish is a protective coating that is painted on teeth to help prevent new cavities and to help stop cavities that have already started.
